Outlook 2020: Change Where You Look for Change

Even before January 1, the year 2020 felt like a big one on the way. Every general election year feels that way, doesn’t it?

The year in pharmacy began like the previous several, with drugmakers raising list prices on nearly 1,400 products by an average of 5.8 percent. New year. New decade. Same old story.

In his State of the Union address, President Trump repeated (mostly false) claims that drug prices have come down for the first time in 51 years. The House’s drug pricing bill reportedly has no chance of becoming law, and the Senate version is still under debate.

Where is all this going, and what can consumers and payers expect in 2020? Probably more of the same from the industry and Washington. So why is our own chief executive so optimistic that real change is already well under way?
